Jeet Kung Do (Chinese name is 截拳道) was founded by famous master Bruce Lee in 1960s. Jeet Kung Do is based on Wing Tsun Quan (Yong Chun Quan, Wing Chun Quan), but it also absorbs a lot of advantages from other martial arts, such as European swordplay, Karate Do in Japan, Taekwondo in Korea, Taiji Quan in mainland China and so on. Its philosophy emphasizes defending instead of attacking. He believes that if people can stop the attack efficiently and defend themselves very well, people can attack more efficiently. Once Bruce Lee said: “I think the spirit of European Swordplay is defending. Defending ourselves is most important to win the game.” In fact, the name of Jeet Kung Do contains this meaning. Jeet (截) in Chinese means defending.
The principle of Jeet Kung Do is that there is no any restrictions about the movements. As Jeet Kung Do was developed by learning the spirits of all kinds of martial arts, practitioners of Jeet Kung Do can absorb any movements into Jeet Kung Do. What you perform doesn’t belong to Bruce Lee, it belongs to you! What you are required to do is to keep learning from other martial arts.
